Hurricane Melissa becomes Category 4 storm

(NBC, KYMA) - Hurricane Melissa, now a Category 4, continues to barrel towards Jamaica and is poised to become the strongest storm ever recorded there.

As of Sunday morning, the storm was about 120 miles south-southeast of Kingston, with maximum sustained winds at 140 mph.

The National Hurricane Center said Melissa could make landfall in Jamaica Monday night or Tuesday morning.

The agency also warning that portions of the country could see life threatening and catastrophic flash flooding and landslides.

On Saturday, Jamaica's National Emergency Operations Center was activated to prepare for impact.

Parish Emergency Operations Centers, regional shelters and Jamaica's emergency response team are also all operational.

A hurricane warning remains in effect.
