Jury selection begins in the trial of a man charged in a New York City subway chokehold death

NEW YORK (AP) — Jury selection has begun in the trial of the U.S. Marine Corps veteran who placed a man in a deadly chokehold on a New York City subway train last year. Daniel Penny has pleaded not guilty to second-degree manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide in the May 1, 2023, death of Jordan Neely. Jury selection started Monday in a Manhattan court and could take two weeks. Neely’s death was a flashpoint in the nation’s debate over racial injustice. Some hailed Penny, who is white, as a hero. Others accused him of racist vigilantism against a Black man who was struggling with drug addiction, mental illness and homelessness.
