Local lawmakers tune into presidential debate

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Local Arizona lawmakers weigh-in on how they scored both sides in Tuesday's presidential head to head.

Arizona State Representative Tim Dunn and Arizona State Senator Brian Fernandez tuned into the debate and have some mixed reactions.

"I think the debate was kind of what we expected former President Trump was kind of all over the place," said Sen. Fernandez.

"I think they teed up a few questions that were not appropriate that they were definitely in the vice president’s favor," said Rep. Dunn.

The two politicians had opposing views on the vice president, and how she answered what some of her future policies would be.

"We just said we're going to help the American people from Kamala Harris' point...We're just going to keep helping the American people live their dreams, but how are we going to do that we didn't have any policy discussion say hey we’re going to do this," said Rep. Dunn.

"I think the Vice President spoke very well. She talked about what she wants to do in the next four years, and I think that she demonstrated that she'd be a great leader," said Sen. Fernandez.

Senator Fernandez says he would like to see the candidates go throughout the United States discussing their plans after the debate.

"Crisscross the country and talk about what the voters are asking, and that's, again, a big part of it is the economy," said Sen. Fernandez.

Meanwhile, for any Independents who may still be on the fence, Representative Dunn had some advice.

"I think the Independents need to look at the policies that are going to affect your lives. That's what's going to decide the decision here in Arizona, and nationwide, are you better off today than you were four years ago," said Rep. Dunn.

This was the first and possibly last presidential debate, both candidates will now decide if they did enough to get their message across or need another platform in order to get that done
