Emergency crews rescue man trapped in deep trench in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Emergency crews rescued a worker who became trapped when a deep trench collapsed Thursday at a construction site at a hillside home in Los Angeles.

Responders worked for nearly six hours in oppressive heat to free the adult male construction worker trapped in soil up to his waist inside the 8-foot (2.4-meter) trench in the Loz Feliz neighborhood, the Los Angeles Fire Department said in a statement.

The worker was in serious condition and taken to a regional trauma center, the statement said. Two firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion at the scene and one was later taken to a hospital for further evaluation.

The crews had to stabilize the trench walls before they could try to pull the worker out, the fire department said.

Video from television helicopters showed more than a dozen firefighters and first responders at the scene.
