CBP scheduled to close gaps in border at Morelos Dam

KYMA

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Construction at the Yuma border barrier near the Morelos Dam will close gaps beginning next week.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection's (CBP) Border Patrol announced construction is scheduled to start next week, they mention this in a press release.

CBP says the Yuma Morelos Dam Project will close four gaps in areas along the Colorado River and place a border barrier.

The project should be completed in Summer 2023.

CBP says because of the proximity to the Morelos Dam and the Colorado River, the area is a safety and life hazard for migrants attempting to cross into the U.S. as they can drown and have injuries from falls.

It is also a risk for the Border Patrol agents, local law enforcement and other first responders responding to incidents in the area says CBP.

Border Patrol agents will still respond to border activity and make arrests in accordance with federal law across Yuma Sector says CBP.

“The safety and security or our workforce, law enforcement partners, and the local community are a top priority,” said Acting Chief Patrol Agent Patricia McGurk-Daniel.  “Yuma Sector is dedicated to working with our state, local, and tribal counterparts to ensure a multi layered approach to secure our nation’s borders and protect our local community.”
