Ukrainian Pres. Zelenskyy meets with Pres. Biden at the White House
(NBC) - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy meets with President Biden at the White House during his first known overseas trip since Russia invaded Ukraine 301 days ago.
Ukrainian President Zelenskyy is thanking President Biden and the American people for continuing to provide support to Ukraine.
Zelenskyy met with Biden in the Oval Office this afternoon.
He presented Biden with a military award on behalf of a Ukrainian captain in the battlefield.
Biden announced the U.S. will be sending Ukrainian forces a patriot air defense system to defend itself from Russian attacks targeting civilian infrastructure.
Biden said Russian President Vladimir Putin is trying to use winter as a weapon against the Ukrainian people.
"And we're gonna continue to strengthen Ukraine's ability to defend itself, particularly air defense, and that's why we're gonna be providing Ukraine with Patriot missile battery and--and training your forces to be able to accurately use it. Together with our partners, we're also gonna impose costs on the Kremlin and we'll support Ukraine in pursuing a just peace. President Zelenskyy, the United States stands with the brave people of Ukraine we stand with you, you've been a great leader," said President Biden.
"And I really I understand that we have very important topics and we'll discuss them everything. So many challenges in Ukraine, in Europe, in the world. And from energy to the situation on battlefield. But but, first of all, I really all my appreciation from my heart, from the hearts of Ukrainians all Ukrainians. From our nation strong nations, all the appreciation to you, first of all, Mr. President, for your big support and leadership, because Europe many countries helped us and are helping now. Because the war is not over," said President Zelenskyy.
"And I want to give you something. One guy, he ™s really, real hero, real captain, and he asked me to pass his award, and he asked me to pass his award to President Biden. You will understand, he is the captain of HIMARS battery. Yes, he ™s very brave, and he said give it to very brave president, and I want to give you that," said President Zelenskyy.
