Arizona has the highest number in fatal pool and spa drownings
New data from two organizations show that Arizona has the highest number of reported fatal pool and spa drownings during the 2022 Swim Season
(KYMA, KECY) - New data from Total Aquatic Programming and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's (CPSC) Pool Safely campaign shows that Arizona has had the highest number of reported fatal child pool/spa drownings during the 2022 Swim Season.
According to CPSC, Arizona led the nation with 14 fatal child pool/spa drownings and the highest number of total fatal child pool/spa drownings of 20 reported fatalities from Memorial Day weekend through August 31, 2022.
Throughout the nation there has been 95 media reported fatal child pool/spa drownings during the season and children 5-years-old and under are a part of the 74 percent of these drownings.
Here are simple steps from Pool Safely:
- Never leave a child unattended in a pool or spa and always watch your children closely around all bodies of water.
- Designate a Water Watcher to supervise children in the pool or spa. This person should not be reading, using a smart phone, or be otherwise distracted.
- Learn how to swim and teach your child how to swim.
- Learn how to perform CPR on children and adults.
- Keep children away from pool drains, pipes, and other openings to avoid entrapments.
- Ensure any pool and spa you use has drain covers that comply with federal safety standards, and if you do not know, ask your pool service provider about safe drain covers and ask your public pool if their drains are “VGB compliant.”
- Take the Pool Safely Pledge before spending time in or near the water.
