Freight train collision killed two workers near Mecca

Union Pacific Railroad said two workers were killed in a freight train collision with equipment east of Mecca, California

(KYMA, KECY) - The Union Pacific Railroad has confirmed two employee deaths caused by a freight train collision where 7 train cars derailed east of Mecca, California around 3:00 a.m. PST.

The derailment occurred north of Bombay Beach on the north shore of the Salton Sea and two Union Pacific employees died, said a Union Pacific spokesman Mike Jaixen.

"The train operated by the two employees entered a siding where it collided with equipment occupying the siding," Jaixen added.

Union Pacific Railroad and the National Transportation Safety Board and working together to investigate this case and the employees that have died were not identified immediately, according to Jaixen.

"Our thoughts are with the employees' families and coworkers," said Jaixen, adding "Union Pacific employees who are struggling with today's tragedy are encouraged to call the Employee Assistance Line 24/7 for additional support."
