VIDEO: U.S. monkeypox cases declining

(NBC) - Monkeypox cases in the United States are decreasing.

That is according to an NBC News Analysis of data from the CDC.

The seven day average of new reported cases decreased from a daily average of 465 on August 10 to 281 on August 31, that is a 40 percent decrease.

Experts belief the decrease is mostly driven by falling case counts in large cities such as New York City and Los Angeles.

They say much of that decrease could be attributed to mindful change in behavior among those who are most at risk for the disease which is men who have sex with other men.

Experts also say the rollout of vaccines may have also played a role in the decline.

Since May, more than 19,000 monkeypox cases have been reported nationwide.
