VIDEO: Gas prices dipping overnight
(NBC) - The national average for a gallon of regular dipped again, overnight down to 4.14, the 51st straight day of sliding prices.
NBC's Maggie Vespa has more from Chicago.
"The national average for a gallon of regular now decling for 51 straight days falling again overnight to now $4.14 on average for a gallon of regular gasoline.
Obviously more expensive in some parts of the country, $4.89 at this Exxon here in Chicago, but it's been declining for 51 straight days, 0.67 lower than it was a month ago when it was $4.81.
So experts say for the average driver to fill up their tank and then lets say head to the grocery store perhaps, they would have an extra close to 8 dollars in their pocket to spend on groceries.
What could you get for 8 dollars, well you could, depending on where you live, get an extra gallon of milk, an extra loaf of bread and/or an extra pound of oranges.
Experts say what's behind the decline, likely a decline in demand.
Data shows people are driving less, quite possibly because of the higher gas prices over the summer and they also note the good people over at Gas Buddy note, this decline could continue, with prices possibly falling below $4/gallon in the coming weeks.
They also caution any number of things could disrupt that, the war in Ukraine could slow global supplies and of course any storm or hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico could, as we've seen before, shut down refineries.
So again, it's no guarantee but experts say right now just enjoy the ride of these declining prices which for the time being is costing less."
