San Diego State pitcher Troy Melton selected by Detroit in second round of MLB Draft
The 2022 Mountain West co-pitcher of the year will be taking his talents to the Tigers after being selected with the 117th overall pick - 13 On Your Side's Luis Lopez reports
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - Former San Diego State pitcher Troy Melton will be furthering his baseball career with the Detroit Tigers.
Melton was selected with the 117th overall pick in this past weekend's MLB Draft.
The Anaheim native was a vital piece of the Aztec's pitching staff during his three-year career.
In his final season in the scarlet and black, Melton won Mountain West co-pitcher of the year honors in the Mountain West conference.
Last season, Melton posted a 2.07 ERA in 65 and 1/3 innings pitched, along with 67 strikeouts.
He also earned Mountain West pitcher of the week honors three times during his college career.
Even national awards were given to Melton, as he was placed on the Golden Spikes Award watchlist prior to the 2021 season.
This pick is just the latest in what has been a trend for the Aztecs baseball program, who have had 27 players selected in the draft over the past eight years.
The highlight of Melton's last season at SDSU came against eventual Mountain West tournament champion Air Force on May 6.
Melton went seven innings, striking out 11 Falcons in the process.
No Aztec pitcher has thrown that many punch-outs in a game since Bubba Derby threw 15 back in 2014.
He joins a Tigers team that has struggled to find wins consistently, as they have not reached the postseason since 2014.
