San Diego Padres hold El Centro Day at Petco Park

The team holds the event every year to bring out fans from the valley, and this year two fan bases actually came together for a fun evening at the ballpark - 13 On Your Side's Luis Lopez reports

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - While Petco Park may be about an hour or so away from the Imperial Valley, that didn’t stop fans of the Padres and Dodgers from coming out for El Centro Day.

It’s been over 15 years running that the Padres have done the event, which offers El Centro residents discounted tickets to come out for a game.

This year, fans got to watch one of the leagues’ most anticipated matchups as the Padres took on their National League West rival in the Dodgers.

Both teams have plenty of fans throughout the valley.

Little league player Christian Rojas made it out to Petco for his second Padres game ever.

“I really like watching players like doing their stuff, I’m in a league, I’m in the Angels, we’re 5-1 and I just love playing ball,” Rojas said.

Some, like Ruben Gonzales, came purely for their passion of America’s pass time.

“Being with the family, watching two of my favorite teams, obviously you know it’s always Padres-Dodgers, even though they’re rivals I love em both," Gonzales said.

Xavier Guerra is originally from the Valley but now lives in San Diego.

Thanks to the special day gave him a chance to come cheer on the boys in blue, while also showing love to his hometown.

“I think it’s really cool, in the valley there’s lots and lots of both Padres and Dodger fans so having an event that kind of showcases the valley is really cool, the valley’s a big place, it’s agricultural, a big place for California and stuff so getting that little highlight is really cool,” Guerra said.
