FBI warning farmers about potential ransomware attacks

(KYMA, KECY) - Farmers need to be on the lookout for potential hackers.

That's according to a warning from the FBI.

Officials say cyber-criminals might go after agriculture cooperatives during planting and harvesting seasons, believing they could be more vulnerable and willing to pay-off the extortion.

The FBI says six grain companies were targeted last fall and two others have already been attacked this year.

In a public advisory, federal officials say a major disruption of grain production would impact the entire food chain.

They're calling on farmers to take defensive measures against the potential threat.
