Midnight at the Oasis makes its long awaited return to Desert Sun Stadium
This year marked the first time the event has been held since COVID-19 forced a cancellation last year - 13 On Your Side's Luis Lopez reports
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Midnight at the Oasis made its return this weekend, and after a long hiatus, the Yuma community welcomed the event back with open arms.
It all kicked off on Friday around noon when gates first opened. As people entered, over 1000 classic cars were on display.
Throughout the weekend, food, drinks, and live music were also available.
Everything is put on by the Caballeros De Yuma. The member in charge of the event is Travis Smith, who is this year’s Captain Midnight, which means he’s been in charge of organizing the event.
To lead the effort this year was a bit more special for Smith, as he was happy to see everything back after last year’s cancellation.
“I’m tickled that there are so many people that are ready to be back to a normal life and get out here and enjoy the nice weather and the beautiful cars,” Smith said.
Among the car shows entrants are people from all over.
Claude Hrycaiko is from Canada. He’s been an entrant since 2012’s show, as the event is always a highlight of his yearly visits to Yuma.
“There’s a real connection between this car show and the community for sure,” Hrycaiko said.
Hrycaiko always displays his 1967 Pontiac Firebird. When we asked what the car has cost him, he wasn’t exactly able to give a total number.
“If I tell you, it’s broadcasted and my wife will find out, lets just say I bought it for $16,500, and I’ve spent a lot more money than that,”
Hrycaiko said.
With all the excitement the event brought back, there’s no doubt people are already counting the days down til next years.
