Senator Lindsey Graham visits the southern border in San Luis
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Senator Lindsey Graham visited the border fence in San Luis today, he said the situation that we saw in Del Rio, Texas could be coming to the southwest border of Arizona very soon.
“If we don't change our policies, Yuma is going to become the Del Rio texas situation. It is coming your way," Graham said.
He said the situation with a growing number of migrants seeking asylum is worse than he thought, and mentioned that many of the migrants he saw today were not from Mexico, but from Venezuela, Brazil, and Cuba.
Later in the day senator Graham came up to Yuma city hall to speak with mayor Doug Nicholls as well as local non-profit leaders.
Mayor Nicholls says the ongoing crisis at the border is something he needs the federal government’s help to deal with.
“This is a federal issue, this needs to be solved at the federal level," Nicholls said. "I can do all the talking I want, I can do all the advocating, but until we have officials, elected leaders, on the ground, understanding the situation, then taking that back, that has an impact.”
Graham said he would take what he learned today back to Washington to try and change border policy.
