Imperial Valley veterans in disbelief over Afghanistan

Local veteran says it could have been done differently - News 11's Wiley Jawhary reports

IMPERIAL, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - Three days after the U.S. withdrew troops from Afghanistan, some Imperial Valley veterans are still in shock at how quickly things transpired.

U.S. Marine Corp veteran and history teacher Daniel Nunez first arrived in Afghanistan in 2006. He spent nine-months in country. Nunez tells News 11's Wiley Jawhary, he's still in shock.

“First and foremost we were pretty shocked at how what we helped to build, fell apart so quickly,” Nunez said.

Nunez was a senior in high school during the 9/11 attacks. He's now back in the classroom, only now he's teaching students about that day, and the 20-years of military conflict in Afghanistan that followed it. Nunez believes the withdrawal will only make the upcoming anniversary more difficult for those who served during the war.

He supports the decision to leave but wishes it could have been different.

"Of course the best result would have been the Afghanistan government living on, but I think some fight on our end would have been better," he said.
