House of Representatives to vote on $1 billion Capitol security bill
(KYMA, KECY/ CNN) - The House of Representatives is expected to pass a $1.9 billion spending bill Thursday to beef up security at the Capitol following the events of the riot on January 6th.
The vote comes one day after the House passed legislation to establish an independent commission to investigate the riots at the Capitol building.
Measures in the new bill are based on the recommendations of a task force led by retired Army Lieutenant General, Russel Honoré that reviewed the Capitol security.
Among the budget items allocated in the bill are:
- $250 million for Capitol grounds security - which could be used for fencing and sensors
- $162 million to fortify doors and windows at the Capitol and House and Senate
- $200 million to create a dedicated quick reaction force to augment Capitol police
- $8 million for body cameras
If the House passes the bill, it will then move to the Senate.
