Real ID requirement delayed, again
(KYMA, NBC) - The Department of Homeland Security has delayed the requirement for a Real ID-compliant form of identification, again.
The initial deadline was set for Oct. 1 of 2021 and would have required travelers over 18 to have a more secure form of ID than is currently required.
Only 43 percent of U.S.-issued driver's licenses are real ID compliant and that does not include Arizona IDs.
The delay is due to a lack of state compliance caused in part by the COVID-19 pandemic, according to DHS.
Although Congress approved the new ruled in 2005, several states didn't begin to issue real IDs to their residents until years later. The regulation was put in place to ensure travelers' identities in light of the 9/11 attacks.
