EL CENTRO, Ca. - (KYMA, KECY) - One former Central Union High School Student is remembering a mentor and a friend after she lost her battle to COVID-19 earlier this week.

Janet Gonzalez, a former Central Union High School employees and beloved member of the community fought the coronavirus until the very end. Her loss left dozens of students in disbelief including former student, Marco Peralta.

“She always pushed to put that smile on her face and also try to put that joy on the faces of other students," said Peralta.

Marco Peralta aspires to be a sports journalist, but said that if it wasn't for the unconditional support of Janet, it would have been impossible. “She would always ask me, ‘ when am I going to see you on the big screen, I would always say really really soon. She would always say I’m here to support you and I can't wait," said Peralta.

He tells News 11 that returning to visit to his old stomping grounds will not be the same. Peralta will always remember Janet as a fighter. “If it wasn’t for her and her support I wouldn’t be where I’m at today. She will be missed. She’s already missed," he said.
