Cases and deaths keep rising in Imperial County

IMPERIAL COUNTY, Calif. (KYMA, KECY)-Imperial County health officials say COVID-19 cases keep rising after Mother's Day and Memorial Day weekend.

Dr. Stephen Munday says in California, there are currently 128,812 cases.

In Imperial County there are 3,013 positive cases, 750 are active cases, 2,225 have recovered, and 38 deaths.

The majority of deaths are from patients 70 years and older.

200 patients have been transferred to other hospitals outside the county.

The county also touched on the board of supervisor's request to reopen completely saying that they’d rather have locals stay in the valley as opposed to going to surrounding areas to get services.

They recently sent a letter to California Governor Gavin Newsom on their request to reopen but Newsom has yet to respond to this request.

The roadmap to recovery goal in the county is less than 8 percent, but so far, Imperial County is at 7 percent. Health officials continue to remind the community to stay home and practice social distancing.

Health officials are hopeful the curve will flatten soon but say there is a lot of mobility and exposure to the virus with social gatherings.

On May 19, health officials say they saw a high case of the virus.

Imperial County still remains in stay-at-home orders.

Health officials say they continue to receive federal and state help. Groups of ambulances have been sent to county to move patients, they continue to receive personal protective equipment that has been sent to hospital and first responders.

The mutual aid system has been very supportive of Imperial County. San Diego and Riverside continue to help Imperial County the most.

Health officials also provided an update on the current patient load at the new IVC site; as of now they have 11 patients, but overall 30 patients have gone through successful discharges.

Officials say every appointment slot is filled at their testing sites.

However, they say people do not show up to their appointments, but it’s important to show up, and if you can’t make it cancel it so they can be available for others.
