Trio busted upon fentanyl smuggling attempt
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Three US citizens are arrested after Border Patrol agents say they found narcotics in the trio's possession.
Tuesday evening, Border Agents at the I-8 immigration checkpoint say they encountered three subjects attempting to transport fentanyl pills.
It happened at about 10:00 p.m. Tuesday evening.
Agents say a Border Patrol canine alerted to a 2009 Ford Focus with three individuals inside. Agents then sent the car to secondary.
Inside, agents found a backpack in the back seat of containing four bags of fentanyl pills. Agents say the approximate value was $33,000.
The driver, a 35-year-old female, the front seat passenger a 55-year-old male, and the rear seat passenger a 31-year-old male, were all US Citizens.
The back seat passenger was arrested for possession with intent and violation of supervised release. The narcotics and vehicle were seized.
Agents say fentanyl is an extremely hazardous substance to handle, reminding the public of the dangers Border Patrol agents face on a day-to-day basis.
