Firefighters in Mexicali transfer COVID-19 patients to hospitals

MEXICALI, B.C. (KYMA, KECY)-The fire station number 23 in Mexicali has become the specialized transfer center for COVID-19 patients.

With a group of 21 paramedics, these firefighters specializing in medical emergencies transfer COVID-19 patients to the hospitals in Mexicali.

The firefighters have been transferring patients since the coronavirus pandemic started.

Due to their profession, they have a specialized team and a hygiene protocol to follow each emergency service they serve. From the isolation team that counts ambulances as the personal equipment that paramedics wear.

The Mexicali Fire Director, Rubén Osuna estimated that around 4 to 5 individuals in serious conditions are transferred to hospitals daily.

The protocols for carrying patients with COVID-19 consist of sending a team to evaluate the individual before being transferred to the hospital.

If they are in serious conditions, individuals are taken to hospitals.

Because the disease is highly contagious, the time to sanitize and disinfect the ambulance takes between 20 to 30 minutes.

Nothing stops paramedics from providing service to the community, especially during these critical moments.
