YUMA, Ariz. ( KYMA, KECY) - Arizona Governor Doug Ducey announced on Wednesday he has decided to extend the stay-at-home order until May 15th due to the ongoing battle with the coronavirus impacting Arizona.

Since the shutdown of all Arizona schools took effect, many local teachers raised the question as to why the governor didn't make any mention on the topic.

One local teacher, Yolanda Lopez, tells News 11 that some students are missing up to nine weeks of material work. “Two hours may seem like a long time, but when you try and take a normal 7 to 8 hour teaching day and condensed it into those two hours - it’s challenging," said Yolanda.

Yolanda said reviewing will have to be done when students return to ensure they are ready to take on the next grade level. “There are situations where students are not completing their work, it’s out of their control, but some are missing nine weeks of work," said Yolanda.

The school is looking into online summer school courses if the stay-at-home order continues. Teachers want to make sure kids still have access to the internet to push forward with academic success. “I know for a fact that we will be providing summer school options, as far as opening up earlier next school year, I couldn’t say," said Yolanda.
