San Felipe fishermen distribute tons of fish in Mexicali
MEXICALI, Baja California (KYMA, KECY) - A group of San Felipe Fishermen practically gave away 22 tons of freshly-caught Corvina fish to a Mexicali neighborhood in need.
The fishermen work for Sunshine Rodriguez, the largest fishing federation in San Felipe. They sold sold each fish for 25 pesos, just over a dollar.
The fishermen say by doing this, those in need are able to buy the expensive fish at a low price, and the fishermen are also able to provide for their own families during this time.
Between three and four fish were delivered to each family arriving at the food pantry. In some cases, fishermen gave away the fish for free, despite the already marked-down price.
The fishermen also took time to criticize the Baja California state government for not supporting the fishing sector this season, since the coronavirus (COVID-19) shut-down a lot of their business.
They say this season could have been fruitful since it was the last tide of Corvina this year, making it possible to catch tons of the product out of the sea.
This lack of assistance from the government forced the fishermen to look for other means of selling their fish, while also helping their community at this time.
The fish was sold and distributed in Mexicali's Valle del Pedregal area, a low-income community. This was the second time the fishermen sold their excess of fish in this way.
