Facebook to warn users about misinformation

Social network plans to alert users about debunked coronavirus rumors

MENLO PARK, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - Facebook will start letting users know if they interact with posts containing harmful misinformation about the coronavirus.

The social network says it will send notifications to users who liked, reacted, or commented on a post later removed by moderators. It will also direct people who engaged with inaccurate posts to information about myths and rumors previously debunked by the World Health Organization (WHO). People will start seeing the warning messages in the coming weeks.

Facebook is among a number of social media platforms taking steps to curb misinformation. It's already banned ads promising coronavirus treatments or cures. The network's also using new algorithms to try and put facts about the virus in front of users with an information page.
