Search for survivors continues - NBC's Jay Gray reports

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (KYMA, KECY/NBC News) - The storms struck fast in the dark of night.

"There was no stopping it. It just came out of the sky." said Nashville Mayor John Cooper.

Multiple tornadoes ripped across Tennessee overnight. One tore a ten-mile path through Nashville. First light provided a clear picture of the devastation, but the splintered wood, and twisted scattered across Tennessee doesn't reveal the state's biggest loss.

"It is heartbreaking we have had loss of life all across the state." said Governor Bill Lee.

While survivors begin what will be a long and difficult recovery, President Trump promised help from the federal government.

"FEMA is already on the ground and I'll be going there on Friday. Our hearts are full of sorrow for the lives that were lost. It's a vicious thing, those tornadoes." said the President.
