(KYMA, KECY)-An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 struck the southeast coast of Russia's Kuril Island, northeast of Japan, early Thursday morning.

According to KTVU News, there were no reports of injuries or damage.

The Japan Meteorological Agency did not report a tsunami threat to Japan.

KTUV reports the islands are part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, an arc of fault lines, that leave this region vulnerable to sizeable earthquakes.
