EL CENTRO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY)-A local American Red Cross volunteer is helping families in Puerto Rico with recovery efforts.

Jose Ortega works for the Red Cross in Imperial County and has now been assigned as a caseworker for families in Puerto Rico.

Ortega will be working remotely from his El Centro office to assist families devastated by the recent earthquakes that hit the PR this month.

A state of emergency has been declared in Puerto Rico following the 6.4 earthquakes that shook the island earlier this month.

On Thursday, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced it was releasing over $8 billion in disaster aid for Puerto Rico.
