MEXICALI, B.C. (KECY/KYMA) - The number of robberies is down in Mexicali and drug seizures are up. This comes as a result of the security strategies of police in Mexicali.

Mexicali Chief of Police, Maria Elena Andrade explained that through security operations, robberies have decreased by more than 25%.

But drug trafficking is a different story.

"The crimes have been reduced to 25 percent, robberies in all its forms, including vehicle thefts," said Andrade. "This represents a lot, homicides and high-impact crimes, we have carried out, for example, seizures of more than half a ton of drugs."

Andrade also adds that with the new police command they have 'achieved these large seizures' leading to a recent seizure of a 'half a kilo of heroin and more than a thousand pills of fentanyl' that did not make it to the streets.

Residents are also meeting periodically to make sure all crimes in their neighborhoods are reported to police.
