Police say injury caused by dangerous holiday practice

PHOENIX, Ariz. (KYMA, KSWT, KECY) - Phoenix police say a toddler is recovering after random gunfire hit him on New Year's Eve.

Officers say the 3-year-old got hit by a bullet fragment while in a backyard. They say he is expected to survive his injury.

Officers are still looking for whoever fired the shot.

Police suspect the bullet came from the common-but-dangerous tradition of firing guns into the air to celebrate the New Year. The practice is a felony in Arizona.

Celebratory gunfire killed a 14-year-old Arizona girl in 1999.
