South Mountain Freeway officially opens
PHOENIX, Ariz. (KYMA, KSWT, KECY) - The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) announced today that the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway has officially opened.
The much-anticipated freeway is intended to bypass busy segments of Interstate 10 (1-10).
On Wednesday, December 18, Gov. Doug Ducey celebrated the upcoming opening of the 22-mile South Mountain Freeway at the site.
Today it was finally opened, with ADOT posting video of smooth traffic, undisturbed by busy downtown Phoenix.
South Mountain Freeway includes 41 bridges, 15 interchanges, 12 miles of sound walls, a pedestrian bridge, and more features.
Construction of the freeway project began in January 2017.
