Abandoned structure is completely lost after fire

Firefighters working to extinguish a fire in an abandoned structure.

EL CENTRO, Calif. (KYMA, KSWT, KECY)- A fire blazing through an abandoned structure forced the El Centro Fire Department to call for mutual aid.

The fire happened on Adams avenue just across the street from the Martin Luther King Jr. Sports Pavillion.

Fire Chief Kenneth Herbert, of the El Centro Fire Department, said it took 15 minutes from the moment first responders arrived on the scene to contain the fire.

5 engines and 20 personnel were on sight to put out the fire, but Herbert said the structure was a total loss.

"The fire was burning through the roof by the time we got here. There's an extensive amount of heat smoke and damage from the flame. And then additionally damage from the water at this point as well."

The cause of the fire and whether someone was inside is still under investigation
