1 dead, 3 injured after fatal crash in Somerton
SOMERTON, Ariz. (KYMA, KSWT, KECY)- UPDATE:
The Yuma County Sheriffs Office said the Hyundai Sonata was traveling northbound on Avenue G. At the same time the Jeep Cherokee was traveling southbound. The driver of the Hyundai tried to pass a third vehicle traveling in the same direction, when the driver struck the Jeep head on.
The three surviving victims of the crash were transported to Phoenix with serious injuries.
Sheriff officials say that alcohol is not a contributing factor to the crash. Next of kin has been notified for the person who died and the case is pending further investigation.
ORIGINAL STORY:
The Somerton Cocopah Fire Department (SCFD) responded to a two-vehicle collision where one person died at the scene at the 1200 block of S. Avenue G., Wednesday.
Upon arrival, they found a dark gray sedan facing north of Avenue G and a black Jeep Cherokee on top of it.
Both vehicles had severe damage to the front of the cars.
Fire officials said the two front passengers of the sedan were trapped in the vehicle as well as a person in the back. The person driving the Jeep was able to get out of his vehicle and was lying on the shoulder when fire officials arrived.
The passenger of the sedan was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
SCFD requested additional assistance from San Luis, Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, and Rural Metro fire departments.
Fire officials said they had to completely cut off the rear door and center post of the sedan.
YCSO is currently investigating the accident.

Deputies are on the scene of a fatality collision on Avenue G and County 13th Street, according to the Yuma County Sheriff's Office (YCSO), Wednesday.
YCSO said a black Jeep Cherokee and a Gray Hyundai crashed into each other after traveling opposite directions.
The driver of the Jeep was transported to the hospital with injuries.
Two individuals riding in the Hyundai were transported to the hospital, and a third passenger died on the scene of the crash.
Traffic in the area is being rerouted.
