Desert delicacy brings in crowds
Six decades later and people still can't get enough
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KSWT, KECY) - Nestled between Friendship Park and the Yuma Civic Center rest large iron grills; sizzling on each grill are hundreds of sausages, but not just any sausages. The Kammann family has been preparing these delights for generations, and for the past six decades they've been selling them to raise money for the Yuma Rotary Club.
As the legend goes, the recipe has been handed down from one generation to the next. The Kammanns made the sausages to compete in cook-offs. The notion to sell them arose during the Rotary's International Buffet competition.
More than six decades later three generations of the Kammann family come together to cook. And sausage lovers come from far and wide to get their hands on what can only be described as a "Desert Delicacy"; a plate of two sausages are partnered with coleslaw and beans.
But, it's more than just a meal, the dish raises money for a variety of programs. From scholarships, to teacher of the year awards and educational trips, the Rotary uses funds from this event for months afterwards.
