Police arrest couple suspected of theft
CALEXICO, Calif. (KYMA, KSWT, KECY) - A couple suspected of being involved in a store burglary in downtown Calexico is now in police custody.
According to The Calexico Police Department (CPD), the suspect did not act alone, he was accompanied by a female accomplice.
Video surveillance at Liverpool Clothing allowed police to identify the male suspect and place a hold on him at the Calexico West port of entry.
According to police many criminals who steal near the downtown area in Calexico, flea to Mexicali and are eventually caught when they attempt to cross back into Calexico.
“We placed a detainer for the male at the port of entry, they are actually the ones who detained the male half and called us," said Marco Madueno, CPD officer.
CPD says the 31-year-old male suspect admitted it was him in the video and even informed police about his female accomplice.
“Once I interviewed him. He gave me a statement. He said the female half might be outside of the port of entry, and once we walked out she was outside waiting for him," said Madueno.
Both suspects were arrested and booked into the Imperial County Jail.
The store owner says he hopes justice is served.
“I feel happy, and like everything is okay. I feel a little bit of peace at least," said Ahmed Mohamed, said Liverpool Clothing store owner.
Although the suspects involved in the burglary were caught, Mohamed says he’s still on high alert.
Just two days ago he caught a shoplifter trying to steal a sweater.
“I’m still thinking that. Maybe at the end of this year, I will think, either I will shut down the business or stay open, we’ll see," said Mohamed.
