23 states join California in greenhouse gas lawsuit

More than 20 states have joined California in its battle to maintain control over greenhouse gas emissions and fuel economy standards.

On Friday, 23 states and two cities joined California in a lawsuit against the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Federal law usually sets vehicle pollution specifications. However, California’s been imposing tougher rules since the 1970’s because of its problems meeting air quality standards.

In recent years, 13 other states and the District of Columbia have adopted regulations similar to California’s.

In September, the National Highway Traffic Administration withdrew the state’s special status. California immediately filed suit. Since then, several other states, and two cities, have joined the legal fight.

Experts say the anticipated court battle promises to have a major impact on future national climate policies.
