SLFD: More than 50 percent spike in overdoses
One border city is feeling the effects of the opioid epidemic.
Over the past year, San Luis police have arrested several teenagers in possession of opioids , including fentanyl .
The san Luis Fire Department ( SLFD ) has seen 33 overdoses this year alone, all teenagers between 14 and 18 years old. Three overdoses were fatal.
That’s an increase of 50 percent compared to 20-18 where SLFD only saw 12 overdoses.
” We have seen that a lot of the exchange happens at the high school- the exchange of hands from drugs and money, but where they actually overdose they’re out of school hours at home or at a friend’s or on the weekends where there is no school, ” said Luis Cebreros , public information officer.
SLFD uses Narcan , like many other first responders, to save people who overdose on opioids .
However, they say now there is a new trend called a Narcan party, where teens use opioids together with Narcan on hand in case someone overdoses.
It explained the availability of the drug is an advantage, but it can also be taken advantage of.
SLFD added one dose of Narcan may not be enough to save a life, making the game even more dangerous.
