Honoring our Veterans: Bob Englehart

Bob Englehart served in The United States Navy.

Bob Englehart served in The United States Navy from 1958 to 1962 on the USS Shangri-La.

After not wanting to go to college, Englehart's father suggested he joined the military and figure out what it was he wanted to do while serving his country. His father was also a veteran of the United States military.

Once Englehart enlisted and was in basic training, he received a letter from Uncle Sam saying he had to join the military. He reminisces giving the letter to his commanding officer who told him he'd handle it and then tossed it into a waste-basket.

His four years in the Navy were quite memorable to him, especially being able to serve a majority of his time on the USS Shangri-La. One memory Englehart had from his time on the carrier was when he was getting ready to go on liberty, and suddenly he was forced to stay behind because the carrier received orders on what we know today as The Cuban Missile Crisis. It was a moment that frightened Englehart, but at the time he was grateful for all the training he went through that helped him feel a little more prepared.

Englehart started his family, in which he has had children who served in the military as well as his grandson and son-in-law. He also was able to graduate college.

He now volunteers helping other Veterans among his community with his wife for very personal reasons. Englehart suggests to any veterans out there to get involved in whatever group they qualify for. He himself is part of The American Legion, VFW, Wreaths Across America where he is actively involved.
