Tucson votes on sanctuary city status

Tucson’s voters are deciding whether to become Arizona’s only sanctuary city.

Proposition 205 would put new restrictions on when police can inquire about immigration status or cooperate with federal law enforcement.

Supporters say the measure would let immigrants know they’re valued and protected.

However, Tucson’s largely Democratic City Council opposes the sanctuary initiative. Mayor Jonathan Rothschild says the city already has strong protections in place for immigrants. Rothschild fears the proposition would endanger parts of the state and federal funding the city enjoys.

People on both sides of the issue agree, the proposition will likely face a legal battle if it passes.
