Romney reacts to murders of Americans in Mexico

Senator Mitt Romney calls the slaying of nine U.S. citizens in northern Mexico “a great tragedy” and calls it something “really unthinkable.”

Nine Americans – three women and six children – were massacred Monday in an ambush along a highway in Sonora.

The victims were part of a faction of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Many of its members have ties to Utah.

Romney’s own father was born in a similar but different group in northern Mexico. He knows none of the people involved, but says he’s still shocked and saddened by the murders.

The Senator told reporters Tuesday, ” Obviously it’s a great tragedy, when any citizens, Mexican or American, in this case American citizens, are brutally murdered.”

Romney says he agrees with President Donald Trump that “Mexico has to really knuckle down and go after some of these cartels and stop this escalating level of violence.”

The Senator says he’s been fully briefed on the killings. He says there’s no indication of a motive. He says he doesn’t believe cartel members specifically targeted the Americans.
