What is Yuma Community Food Bank’s biggest holiday need?

The Yuma Community Food Bank’s (YCFB) biggest need this time of year might not be what you think.

There is always a demand for food donations but right now, they are in need of more volunteers.

“We never have enough,” said Yuma Community Food Bank President and CEO, Shara Whitehead. “With the generosity of our growers, we’re going to be receiving a lot of leafy greens, and we could use those extra arms and legs to come in and help us pack.”

Most nonprofit organizations see an increase in November and December and the YCFB is no exception.

Serving up to 26,000 people a month, it is a busy place. About a third of the people who use the YCFB are children and almost 40 percent are seniors.

The biggest demographic is low-income individuals.

“Families where more than one person within the family is working in the household,” Whitehead said. “It’s because of either educational deficiencies that they don’t have better-paying jobs or it’s other reasons they don’t necessarily disclose.”

With Thanksgiving a few weeks away, the food bank is hosting its first-holiday food drive.

They plan to serve 300 families as well as partner with local retailers to give out turkeys to families in need.
