Three-vehicle collision leaves two injured, YCSO investigates cause

Two men are transported to the hospital with injuries after a three-vehicle collision on South Avenue B Monday morning.

The Somerton Cocopah Fire Department (SCFD) said they responded to an accident between County 18th and 19th on South Avenue B where they found a white Honda CRX with damage to the driver’s side.

Further south on the center of Avenue B personnel found a blue Mini Cooper and a tan Nissan Frontier with severe front end damage.

SCFD said the driver of the Mini Cooper was trapped in his vehicle at the time of the incident. All vehicles involved only had drivers and no passengers.

The driver of the Nissan complained of pain to his head, neck, chest, and back. He was placed into full cervical spine precautions and transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center.

The driver of the blue Mini Cooper was extricated of his vehicle with a “jaws of life” tool. A tool that opens vehicles when a victim is trapped.

The San Luis Fire Department personnel assisted with the driver of the Honda. The driver did not suffer any injuries and refused treatment.

The driver of the white Honda said the blue Mini Cooper was southbound and crossed over the centerline. A northbound vehicle narrowly missed impact with the Mini Cooper and the driver of the Honda attempted to avoid the impact but was sideswiped by the Mini Cooper.

Reports said after sideswiping the Honda, the Mini Cooper spun and impacted the Nissan truck head-on. The impact was of such force that the engine of the Mini Cooper was knocked out of the vehicle.

SCFD said the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the accident.
