Southwest Airlines pilots accused of streaming video of inside plane restrooms

Anthony Quintano

An Arizona flight attendant is suing Southwest Airlines, claiming two pilots live-streamed video from inside the plane’s bathroom.

Flight attendant Renee Steinaker of Maricopa County has filed a lawsuit against the airline saying Southwest tried to keep her quiet about her findings, NBC reports.

In the lawsuit, Stainaker alleges she was flying to Phoenix in February 2017, when Captain Terry Grahm called her to the cockpit so that he could use the restroom. The airline’s policy states that two employees must be in the cockpit at all times.

Steinaker noticed an iPad mounted to the windshield by Grahm’s seat, streaming video from inside the bathroom. She was able to see Grahm on the iPad screen when he entered.

When confronted, Grahm and co-pilot Ryan Russel admitted to her that it was part of a new security measure, though they tried to obstruct her view of the screen.

Steinaker took a picture of the iPad, and reported the incident to Southwest when she landed in Phoenix. She was told it would be investigated but the pilots would not be disciplined. They continue to fly, NBC reports.

Steinaker claims she has been ” stalked and monitored ” by Southwest managers, and has also been subject to increased performance audits.

The pilots have denied these allegations in court. Southwest Airlines also denies it places cameras in plane bathrooms, stating:

” The safety and security of our Employees and Customers is Southwest’s uncompromising priority. As such, Southwest does not place cameras in the lavatories of our aircraft, ” the airline said in a statement. “At this time, we have no other comment on the pending litigation.”
