Woman says speeding convoy scared mule, left her in hospital

A local woman accuses several marines of speeding down the streets of Wellton in their military vehicles. In one instance… She says it resulted in her getting bucked off of her mule.

Charmaine Ciancio tells KYMA she’s been calling Marine Corp Air Station Yuma for years about the military convoys rushing down her street.

She reached her breaking point Friday. She says one vehicle sped past her while she rode her mule. She says she was thrown off the animal and onto the street.

She said the vehicles didn’t hit her, but the impact of the fall sent her to the hospital for several days. She suffered a hip injury and now uses a walker.

” I landed on the saddle horn a couple times, like right in the pelvic hip area. I took a pretty big beating there and I also hit my face on the horn. I was wearing a helmet, ” said Ciancio .

She thinks her hospital bills will be in the thousands, but she’s not focusing on the money. All she wants is for all drivers to slow down on the road, regardless of who’s behind the wheel.

The speed limit is only 40 miles per hour down the road near 29E and County 14th Street.

Cianco says military vehicles usually go much faster, but one neighbor we spoke didn’t agree. He said they don’t speed.

The road borders the Barry M Goldwater bombing range managed by MCAS Yuma. Public affairs tells us the Marines are investigating the incident.
