New traffic signal to unveil Monday

For the first time in the City of Yuma, you will see a flashing yellow arrow at a stoplight on Fourth Avenue and Eighth Street.

It’ll take the light from this-to this a flashing yellow light alerting drivers to yield before they make a left-hand turn.

The City of Yuma has been letting drivers know the change is coming by placing signs alerting drivers to the signal.

It chose this location because of the traffic volume city engineers see at the light.

” We are kind of piggybacking off of those communities who have tried first and learned. We’re putting it out there to see if motorists get used to it, how they react to it. It’s going to be up there for a three to six month test period, ” said Dave Nash, City of Yuma.

The Federal Highway Administration found that crashes decrease by about 20-percent with the flashing yellow light.

The Yuma Police Department said that using the yellow arrow should get more traffic through during each signal cycle.

It will be installed on Monday.
