Arpaio continues battle to erase conviction

Former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio continues his battle to erase a contempt of court conviction from his record.

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals heard arguments on his case Wednesday.

Arpaio was convicted of contempt in July 2017 for disobeying a court order barring traffic patrols targeting immigrants.

President Donald Trump pardoned Arpaio just a month later. However, a judge refused to expunge the conviction, saying a pardon only protects a person from punishment, it does not erase a conviction or change the facts surrounding a case. The former sheriff is now appealing that decision.

Many believe Arpaio ‘s conviction cost him re-election in 2016. He’s running for sheriff again in 2020.
