Gabe’s Guide: Hawaii in the desert
For many people, the desert southwest is synonymous to Mexican food, its proximity to the border, and 365 days of the desert heat.
But what many people do not know is just how diverse the desert southwest is.
Due to our location, we attract people from all walks of life, including people from Hawaii who moved from the Marine base in Honolulu, or those who are just looking for a more affordable place to live.
A local restaurant Poke Inato recently opened their doors in October 2019, to introduce Yuma to food typically served in Hawaii.
Food like ahi poke, chicken katsu , and kalua pork are served there. It is a family effort running the place, and co-owner Noela Gadingan says that they wanted to introduce a unique experience to the people of Yuma especially at their location across the Marine Corps Air Station in Yuma.

Arizona Western College has a class where Anakē Kaipolani teaches her students about the Hawaiian culture through dance and language.
Students are able to learn the hula, what aloha means to the people of Hawaii, and the food that is common for them as well.
