César Chávez’s grandson pays tribute through documentary

In his quest to meet the legacy of his grandfather Cesar Chávez, Eduardo Chávez created the documentary “Hailing Cesar” film project, where he explores the activist’s beginnings.

The 24-year-old confessed that the only memory he has of his grandfather was a photograph with him when he was one year old.

Not knowing about his grandfather’s past, made him eager to learn more about Chavez’s agricultural worker’s organization.

Eduardo said the documentary took a year to produce.
Much of it was recorded in the agricultural fields of Sonoma, Calif., where Eduardo spent his time working as did his grandfather Cesar and his father Fernando Chavez did.

“Before I went to the field to work I didn’t know much about that life, I didn’t know how difficult or heavy that job is and also how almost 40 or 50 years have passed but this story is still important and I hope the young people of this era can learn Some of my documentaries.”

Eduardo says the main purpose of the documentary is to continue his grandfather’s legacy and not forgotten by the new generations.

In Yuma, Cesar Chavez is still recognized by young people.
Over 200 Arizona Western College students attended the screening of the documentary on October 22 in the campus conference room.

Eduardo admitted this is the first time he visits Yuma and how emotional it is for him to show his project to the community.
“It’s a little strange since I’ve never been to Yuma. I know he started his life and ended his life here and I’m very proud of it, but I’m also nervous to show the documentary to the people who live here in Yuma.”
