Building may be named after former Yuma mayor

A City of Yuma utility building might just have a special name attached to it.

The City Council has the opportunity Wednesday night to vote on whether the building will be the named after former mayor Thomas F. Allt .

Mayor Allt served from 1963 to 1973.

Current Mayor Doug Nicholls says Allt was an easy choice for the dedication. He credited the three-term mayor for the development that made Yuma the city it is today.

Mayor Allt’s legacy includes shaping the way for Arizona Western College, working towards cleaner water in Yuma, and replacing miles of dirt road with pavement and sidewalks.

His son, Father John Allt , said his father came to Yuma after health issues made him leave Boston. The young Allt says his father needed Yuma as much as Yuma needed him.

” He gave it some leadership and allowed it to become what it is today, ” said Father Allt .

He adds that his father was responsible for the location of the freeway. That made Yuma much more than just a pit stop for travelers.
