WWII vet turns 98, local restaurant throws him a surprise party

It’s not every day that one of our locals celebrate their 98th birthday.

One restaurant in Yuma decided to give the birthday boy a gift he’s never received.

Jim Whedon is one of Brownie’s Cafe’s regular guests.

They describe the World War II veteran as introverted and humble.

One of the owners, Glenda Brooks, said ” His personality…he’s really a good man. He felt like he really didn’t do that much [in WWII] but I feel that he did and I felt he should be recognized for it. ”

So, for his 98th birthday, Brownie’s wanted to do something special for Jim.

Jim’s friend, Jennifer Sterenberg said, ” Glenda woke up from a dream. She told me, Jennifer, I woke up in the middle of the night and wanted to do something for Jim for his birthday. ”

Glenda added, ” I woke up at like 1 o’clock in the morning…he’s turning 98-years-old, a World War II vet. We here at Brownie’s decided to throw him a birthday party. ”

Jim has never had a birthday party in his close to a century of living.

He said, “98 crept up on me fast.”

Though he may not say much, it’s pretty hard to surprise such a wise guy.

Jim said he had an inkling that the restaurant was going to have a party for him.

Nonetheless, he is thankful to share this milestone with his friends, or as he calls them, ” Some of my old timers here that I recognize. ”
